Though tracking and overall quality is amazing nowadays, pitch shifting doesn't sound completely the same as being tuned to your target tuning. If instead you're going from, say, E-standard to a complete different tuning such as D-standard - and don't tend to use other tunings (and can afford it), having a second axe is ideal. If that's not what you mean, the responses you got are due to this. Which is "E-Standard Drop-D tuning", which we shorten and just call Drop-D tuning.
